A Quick Overview Of How To Say Lingerie
Lingerie is French for underwear - it comes from the word 'linge' which means 'linen'. Most English speakers probably know that 'lingerie' is a French word, but don't realist that the way we pronounce 'lingerie' in English (lohn/zhu/ray) is incorrect in French.
That said, this mispronunciation has become so prevalent, that if you affect the French pronunciation in English, it sounds wrong to most English-speakers. This is a mistake that has become correct by usage.
I don't have a problem with this particular pronunciation being incorrect, but people seem to rely on it for other French words ending in '-in', and so the error is perpetuated. 'Christian Louboutin' is the most obvious recent example. This is unnecessary.
