A Quick Overview Of Kore
How to pronounce Kore, Korai in English
Kore is a a Greek word for 'girl', but it refers to a particular type of statue that was popular in Greece to mark graves or made as votive offerings. You can read more about them here.
No-one knows exactly how Ancient Greek or any other ancient language was pronounced, but we can make some educated guesses. Greek is a phonetic language, so it is very unlikely that 'kore' was pronounced like the English word 'core'. It is more correct to pronounce the word as two syllables ko:reh, and English speakers will tend to say 'kor:ray' which is perfectly acceptable.
The plural of kore is not kores, it is korai, and we pronounce that as the spelling indicates.
