The jalapeño is a medium-sized chili pepper that is commonly picked and consumed while still green. It is used as a condiment in many Mexican dishes or eaten raw to accompany meals. It is named after the city of Xalapa (aso spelled Jalapa), in the state of Veracruz, where it was traditionally cultivated in pre-Colombian times. At present about 160 square kilometres (40,000 acres) are dedicated to its cultivation in several regions of Mexico.
