What is Baobab?
A Quick Overview Of Baobab
How to pronounce Baobab in English
The word Baobab, which is the name of an African tree, is derived from the Arabic word 'buhibab', according to Wiktionary. The word 'buhibab' apparently means 'fruit with many seeds' which makes sense, because the hard, gourd-like fruits of baobab trees contain many seeds. The pronunciation of baobab is quite straightforward provided you remember that the first 'a' sounds like the 'a' in 'yay'.
As a matter of interest, the farm where my Grandmother was born in northern South Africa had lots of baobab trees. As children, we learned to crack open the hard outer skin, and add milk to the whitish, powdery seeds inside to make a type of 'yogurt'. Baobab powder is slightly sour and not at all sweet. I think it's quite delicious, but it's difficult to explain the flavour. Today it is considered to be a superfood.
The plural of baobab is baobabs.
